Kari Lake released her new book, Unafraid: Just Getting Started, on Tuesday. The Arizona Sun Times was provided with a review copy in advance. In the book, which contains a forward by Donald Trump, Lake went over the bias she discovered while working in media, her race for governor, election fraud, and other issues like border security that she has championed.
Lake explained in detail why she decided to leave her anchorwoman job, discussing how she observed the tactics broadcast TV used to make Republicans look bad and Democrats look good. She asked God for guidance when she became troubled about saying things on air regarding COVID-19 she knew were wrong. She opened her Bible and 1 Timothy 6:7 jumped out at her, “For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.”
Lake was working on Election Night in 2020 when Fox News called Arizona early for Joe Biden, which really disturbed her. She resigned on March 1, 2021. She had no idea where her career would next take her, until people began urging her to run for governor.
Lake called out prominent establishment Republicans in her book. Shortly after she quit her job, she asked former Republican Governor Jan Brewer to meet with her to discuss possible future political plans. When Lake brought up the 2020 election problems, she said Brewer was very dismissive of looking into the fraud. Lake cited an embarrassing debate performance Brewer had in 2010, where she froze up twice for multiple seconds, and hinted that perhaps Brewer knew she was going to win the election in advance so didn’t care. Brewer co-chaired the campaign of Lake’s moderate rival in the gubernatorial primary, Karrin Taylor Robson.
The book is full of Lake’s sarcastic sense of humor with juicy tidbits. In regards to Robson, Lake said Robson skipped an election integrity rally put on by Turning Point USA that “every relevant Republican candidate for office attended” since “Karen … allegedly skipped the rally to spend the weekend on her billionaire husband’s yacht.” She noted that Robson cropped her 93-year-old husband out of photos and didn’t even include him on her Christmas card photo.
Lake revealed some intriguing insights about the race. She said Robson outspent her 20-to-1 in ads during the primary; a total of $20 million, the most ever in an Arizona gubernatorial race — and that was just the primary.
Lake revealed that the $350 donation she’d been accused of making to Barack Obama had actually been made by her husband. She also made numerous donations to conservative Republicans, which the media ignored.
Lake didn’t hold back going after some of the most disliked Republicans in Arizona. She went over the late Senator John McCain’s controversial history, and talked about accompanying his wife Cindy McCain on trips. She said the female McCain had a male “friend” named Dino who went with her on trips, and Lake included photos of the three of them together in the book.
She ended the book discussing the election fraud that occurred in 2022. She referred to Maricopa County Recorder Stephen Richer and Maricopa County Supervisor Bill Gates as “dumb and dumber.” She pointed out that leading into the general election, the Real Clear Politics poll average had her up an average of 3.5 points, while internal polling had her up 10 points.
Lake took a shot at Runbeck Election Systems, the private third-party contractor Maricopa County Elections uses to process ballots, which had problems maintaining chain of custody of them, “Runbeck is where the chain of custody for Arizona ballots goes to die.”
Lake wrapped up the book with some more humor, “I’ve been labeled an ‘election denier’ so much that I might as well tattoo it to my body and save journalists the trouble.”
She concluded, “I am the lawful governor of Arizona. The current occupant of the Governor’s Office is just a squatter.” Lake recently appealed the latest rejection of her election challenge by Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Peter Thompson to the Arizona Court of Appeals.
